Background of the study
This study appraises community-led language planning initiatives aimed at preserving the Tiv language, which is integral to the cultural identity of Tiv speakers. In many regions, grassroots efforts have emerged to document, revitalize, and promote indigenous languages through community-based projects (Tarok, 2024). These initiatives range from oral history recordings and local language classes to community radio programs and cultural festivals. The Tiv community, faced with the pressures of globalization and the dominance of major languages, has increasingly taken the lead in developing strategies to preserve their linguistic heritage. The study examines the methodologies, successes, and challenges of these community-led initiatives, drawing on case studies and interviews with local leaders and educators. It explores how community-driven efforts complement or contrast with government policies, and how they contribute to language standardization, cultural continuity, and youth engagement (Tarok, 2024). By integrating perspectives from sociolinguistics and community development, the research offers a nuanced understanding of the pivotal role that grassroots movements play in sustaining the Tiv language.

Statement of the problem
Despite active community-led initiatives, the Tiv language continues to face challenges in preservation and standardization. These efforts, while commendable, often struggle with limited resources, fragmented coordination, and a lack of formal support structures (Tarok, 2024). As a result, the sustainability of such initiatives is uncertain, and there is a risk that localized efforts may not scale up to meet broader language preservation goals. This study seeks to identify these challenges, assess the overall impact of community-led language planning, and explore how these initiatives can be better supported to ensure the long-term viability of the Tiv language.

Objectives of the study:

To appraise community-led initiatives for Tiv language preservation.

To identify challenges affecting the sustainability of these efforts.

To recommend strategies for enhancing community-driven language planning.

Research questions:

What community-led initiatives are in place for Tiv language preservation?

What challenges hinder their effectiveness?

How can these initiatives be strengthened for long-term impact?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth appraisal of community-led language planning initiatives for Tiv language preservation. The findings will offer insights for community leaders, policymakers, and cultural advocates on how to overcome challenges and build sustainable grassroots movements. Enhancing these initiatives is crucial for preserving the Tiv language and ensuring cultural continuity (Tarok, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to appraising community-led language planning initiatives for Tiv language preservation, focusing exclusively on local projects and grassroots efforts.

Definitions of terms:

Community-led: Initiatives driven by local members rather than formal government bodies.

Language preservation: Efforts to maintain and protect a language from decline.

Grassroots: Movements that originate from the local level.
